Online lessons with Aljabra Tutoring

Your lesson space

Online lessons work best when the setup is right, so we ask that your child joins from a quiet room with a door, using a laptop or desktop rather than a phone. Headphones help a great deal with focus.

Lessons are taught on a shared digital whiteboard, so your child will need a graphics tablet to write on it. We send one out before the first lesson and help you set it up. It is yours to keep, with our compliments, whether lessons continue.

We ask that cameras stay on for the whole lesson. A tutor reads a great deal from a student's face and knowing when someone is lost rather than thinking is most of what makes one-to-one teaching work.

For safeguarding, lessons should take place in a shared or family area of the home rather than a bedroom, with a parent or another adult somewhere in the house.

Joining and connection problems

Lessons run on Zoom. You will receive a joining link before your first session, and the same link will work each week.

Please join a couple of minutes early so the lesson can start on time. If the connection drops during a lesson, we will try to reconnect straight away, and any time lost to a problem at our end will be added to the session or credited. Time lost to a problem at your end cannot be added on or credited, so it is worth checking the setup works before the first lesson.

Cancelling and rescheduling

Your child's lesson time is reserved for them each week, and the tutor has prepared for it, so we ask for at least 48 hours' notice before the lesson start time if you need to cancel or move a session.

Cancellations made with less than 48 hours' notice are charged in full. With more than 48 hours' notice we will always try to find an alternative time, though this depends on tutor availability. If no alternative can be found the session is simply cancelled and not charged.

Lessons begin and end at the scheduled time. If a student joins late, the session still finishes as planned.

If we need to cancel

Occasionally a tutor will be unwell or unable to teach. If that happens, we will tell you as early as we can and offer either a rescheduled session or a credit on your next invoice. You will never be charged for a lesson we cancel, and any time lost through a tutor being late is added to the session or credited.

Payment

Lessons are paid for in advance. Invoices are sent automatically and payment is taken from the card saved on your account, so there is nothing for you to do each month once you are set up.

If payment has not gone through, we will get in touch, and lessons may be paused until the account is up to date. We do not tie you into a minimum term, so if you want to stop lessons just let us know as early as you reasonably can.

Homework

Students are set work between lessons, usually sent by email. It is a small amount and it matters more than people expect, because an hour a week on its own does not move a grade.

We will let you know if it stops being completed.

Behaviour

We expect students to arrive ready to work, treat their tutor with respect, and keep phones away during the lesson.

If behaviour becomes a problem we will talk to you about it first and work out how to fix it together. Serious disrespect or abuse towards a tutor is different, and in those cases lessons will stop immediately.

We may also need to end tuition if the arrangement stops working, for example where payments are repeatedly late or the agreed expectations are not being met. We would always talk to you before it came to that.

Safeguarding and your data

All our tutors hold an enhanced DBS certificate and follow our safeguarding procedures. Our designated safeguarding lead is Heba, contactable at heba@aljabra.com.

Some lessons are recorded so that we can check the quality of our teaching and train our tutors. Recordings are seen only by Aljabra staff, are never shared or published, and are deleted after 3 months. If you would rather your child's lessons were not recorded, email hello@aljabra.com and we will make sure they are not.

We hold the details you give us in order to teach your child, arrange lessons and take payment, and we do not share them with anyone else or use them for marketing without asking you first. You can ask to see what we hold or ask us to delete it at any time by emailing hello@aljabra.com.
